Wedding Cake – Kitchener-Waterloo, ON

Last weekend Icing Inspirations held their 2nd Annual Cake Competition and just like last year I signed up weeks in advance fully intending to prepare my showpiece WAY ahead of time.  Well…that didn’t happen.  After a very busy June I found myself staring at my cake sketch and all my materials the night before the submission deadline.  Yeesh.  Here we go again.  My sketch had actually been completed several weeks earlier, but I knew I was going to have to tweek the original design in order to finish it on time as there was just too much to do.

Having entered the Professional Division, I had to design a 3, 4 or 5 tier wedding cake based on the description of a fantasy couple.  There was a lot of information in the write-up so lots of opportunity to take an idea and create something unique.  I decided to place my focus on the bride’s love of fashion, sparkle, and a little bit of her dress.  There was also a push towards French-inspired fashion on this cake along with a handwritten French note since the couple was engaged in Paris.

After twelve hours here’s what came out of the kitchen and everything on this cake is edible!   All of the buttons and brooches were created from custom molds and the brooches and borders were hand studded for extra detail.

I love this cake.  In fact, I think it’s one of my all time favourites.  And it placed third overall which is equally as satisfying!   Next year I’ll be sure to figure out a game plan even further in advance.  Although that’s what I said last year…

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Monday, March 28, 2011

Change is inevitable and it occurs for many different reasons.  Sometimes it results because of our own actions and other times we’re forced to change because of the actions of others.  Recently I’ve been exposed to both and I’ll readily admit that it’s not something I like to participate in on a regular basis.   I like consistency and I’m definitely a creature of habit.  (My Starbucks addiction is proof enough!)  BUT I’ve come to realize that without change our feet remain planted and we may never realize the potential that exists.

Two and a half years ago FLAVOUR was launched with really no game plan.  I didn’t know where I wanted it go and I didn’t know how I would get there, but I DID know that it was something I just wanted to do if only for fun.   Little did I anticipate that my small scale hobby would open the door to a spectrum of challenging projects, marathon cake weekends, and amazing clients that put enough trust in me to just let me do my thing.  Despite the long nights and tiresome days it really has been satisfying on so many levels.

So after a very busy 2010 I decided that it was time for a FLAVOUR facelift and a little work-life balance check.   It’s been months in the making with many late nights not only for myself, but also for Andrea of Inkling Design and Tricia from Tricia Marie Photography who played a vital role in bringing this project to life.  These ladies did a fantastic job and I can’t thank them enough.  I also can’t forget my creative cousin who I probably drove insane throughout this entire process!  FLAVOUR’s look all started with her.

Today I’m happy to say that we’re finished and I’m thrilled!  Feel free to explore the new site and, as always, comments are welcome.  For followers of the old blog I’m sad to say that it’s run its course, but that you’ll still find the same features here along with some new ones.  And stay tuned as you’ll soon be able to follow FLAVOUR on Twitter!

I’ll leave you with a few photos Tricia took of her boys’ birthday cake last month, and a wish for Spring to get a move on it.  As I’m definitely tired of the cold…
