Wedding Cupcakes – Galt Country Club, Cambridge ON

In the realm of wedding sweets, cupcakes are still going strong and recently I had someone ask me why.  I don’t know the concrete answer to that, but I can speculate.

When it comes to serving, cupcakes are hassle free.  You don’t have to worry about cake cutting fees, plating issues, or the venue cutting a cake incorrectly.  And yes it happens.  I have personally been to two weddings where the cake was massacred thanks to an obviously inexperienced server.  But c’est la vie!

In most cases with cupcakes you can also have a broader range of flavours and it’s a grab-and-go treat.   (Don’t be surprised if some guests walk away with more than one!)

Last weekend Steph and Travis tied the knot at the Galt Country Club in Cambridge and what a beautiful spot this is.  Situated on the banks of the Grand River it has a modern club house with balcony overlooking the greens and with the sun out in full force I’m sure this would have made for some amazing photographs!   Too bad you have to be a member (or know one) to have your event here!

Steph knew she wanted cupcakes right from the start along with a small cake for cutting.  Using a floral inspiration and her colours of pale pink and white here’s what we came up with:

Congratulations Steph & Travis!  Wishing you much happiness from this day forward!

Post Destination Party

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Several months ago Marilyn contacted me about putting together a cupcake display for her daughter’s wedding reception.  The wedding actually took place in the Dominican Republic back in April and the event this past weekend was actually an informal post wedding celebration.

In keeping with the original beach theme and the bride’s chosen colours of chocolate brown and blue, a selection of cupcakes topped in varying shells, umbrellas, and flip-flops were created on a tiered display which was then accented with bright coloured Gerbera daisies (the brides’s favourite).

Here’s a shot of some of the shell-topped banana cupcakes highlighted in the chosen shade of blue and wrapped in chocolate brown liners.

Claire’s 1st Communion

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Just a quick post this evening to highlight Claire’s first communion this past weekend!  Hilary from One for The Wall Photography contacted me about whipping up a last minute batch of cupcakes for this event and once again she provided some great photos.  Here we have chocolate cupcakes with raspberry buttercream.

The only downside with cupcakes (or upside depending on how you look at it!) is that sometimes there are extras after the order has been filled….and they don’t last very long.  Yup.  Breakfast of champions!

Thanks Hilary!

Madly Creative

Thursday, April 21, 2011

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see? Total nonsense, but total fun!

A couple of months ago Ellen contacted me about her daughter’s birthday party.  Or should I say unbirthday party, as Jayna had requested a Mad Hatter themed event to celebrate her 9th.  First you have to understand that Ellen loves to plan events so a request like this, which might seem daunting to some, was enough to ignite a spark in her imagination.  The colour palette for the party was actually chosen by Jayna with purple, pink, and lime green being the primary hues.  Using this as a starting point the rest of the event was coordinated with these colours in mind.

Believe me when I say that Ellen left no stone unturned.  From the coloured bread and official Alice costume for Jayna, to the Disney Cheshire Cat in a tree branch, you could tell she put a lot of thought into the details that would take this party from good to exceptional.

My job was to provide the cake, cupcakes, cookies and some other treats.  However, sometimes life throws you a curve ball.  Due to an unfortunate situation I had to enlist the help of a couple of friends who took care of the cookies and brownies on my behalf.  A big thanks to them for coming to my rescue!   As for Jayna’s cake and cupcakes, after seeing Ellen’s plans for the decor I steered clear of the typical topsy turvy cake and opted for a whimsical garden inspired cake instead.  This is the first time outside of Rick Reichart’s class that I actually painted the base fondant layer of a cake rather than mixing gel colours directly into it.  I love how it turned out.  Vibrant and totally appropriate for Jayna’s party.

Ellen also enlisted the help of her friend Alycia to create the custom stationery including table menus, hats, and food and drink tags.  These definitely added that extra special touch.

When the day of the party arrived and all the elements were combined, the results were phenomenal and Hilary from One For The Wall Photography was there to capture it all.  Thanks to Hilary for providing these amazing photos!  They clearly showcase all the hard work that went into making Jayna’s party a truly memorable one.

Now some people might look at these photos and think it’s over the top or maybe unrealistic for a simple birthday party.  But consider the bigger picture.  This wasn’t all Ellen’s doing.  Jayna helped too.  And twenty years from now I bet she’ll still remember every detail.

To share her passion, Ellen recently started a blog.  You can follow her party planning adventures on www.inspiredaffairs.blogspot.com

If you like the paperwork shown and think you might want some help with your next function, Alycia’s custom stationery can be found at http://www.stampinup.net/esuite/home/stampinart/mystory.

A Bun-ny in the Oven

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Jennette, a former FLAVOUR bride, is expecting!  Her and her husband Adam are pretty excited as they anxiously await the arrival of their little baby girl or boy.  That’s right.  It’s a surprise!  But despite having to remain gender neutral, Jennette and Adam have still managed to do it up in style by focusing their decor efforts around a bunny theme in greens and browns.   I wouldn’t expect any less from Jen who has excellent taste.  And my favourite part?  The argyle wall!  How awesome is that?!?

Anyways, this past weekend was also Jennette’s baby shower held at The Emporium in New Dundee.  If you have a chance to check this place out, do so.  The aged cheddar and onion tart is UNbelievably good.   It has this amazingly cheesy texture and just enough onion that even those of us that are not big onion fans can cope.  Softer than a quiche (but not saucy that you need a spoon), I could eat this every day and still be in awe.   But I digress.

Nana-to-be ordered a cupcake display with topper cake for the event which was also themed in greens and browns.  Taking cue from Jennette’s nursery and expected due date, her cupcakes were decorated in spring flowers, bunnies, and chicks as this little gift is actually being delivered on Easter weekend.  The flavour of her cupcakes was also a no-brainer.   Chocolate cinnamon, which is mom-to-be’s favourite.

Jennette and Adam, best wishes for a smooth transition!
